Our Story

Where the name comes from

A sextant measures your position at sea by comparing where you are to where known reference points lie. Voyager Sextant was founded with the same principle in mind: that clear retirement planning for an expatriate is not about picking a product, it is about establishing your coordinates first.

The firm grew from conversations with long-term Hong Kong residents who had accumulated years, savings, MPF contributions, and in many cases property and pension entitlements in more than one country — yet found that the standard retirement planning industry was not organised to address that complexity. Most guidance either assumed you would stay in Hong Kong, or assumed you would simply return to your passport country. Neither assumption fit.

Voyager Sextant was established to fill that gap — not as a financial advisory firm, but as an education provider. Our courses equip expatriates to understand their own situation clearly enough to make considered decisions and to work productively with the advisers, accountants, and planners who will help them execute those decisions.

We are based in Central, Hong Kong, and our content is written with the specific characteristics of Hong Kong expatriate life in mind: the MPF system, the common home countries of UK, US, Canada, and Australia, and the particular considerations of people who have built substantial lives here and are now beginning to think carefully about what comes next.

Our Mission

"To give long-term expatriates in Hong Kong the structured education they need to approach retirement decisions with clarity and confidence — on their own terms, at their own pace."

How We Work

Standards we hold ourselves to

Educational Integrity

We are an education provider, not a financial advisory firm. Our courses present frameworks and information — they do not recommend specific products, funds, or providers. That line is maintained in every module.

Regular Content Review

MPF rules, tax treaties, and home-country pension regulations change. We review all programme materials on a rolling basis and update them when the regulatory landscape shifts in ways that affect participants' decisions.

Data Privacy

Participant information is held in accordance with Hong Kong's Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance. We do not share participant details with third parties, and we do not use participation data for marketing purposes.

Adult Learning Design

Our programmes are designed for working professionals with demanding schedules. Modules are structured to be completed without disrupting professional commitments, and pace is designed to allow for considered reflection.

Country Coverage Standards

Where we cover a specific country's pension or tax framework, we do so with documented sources and we note clearly when rules vary by individual circumstance. We do not present general rules as universally applicable.

Clear Language

Retirement planning involves genuinely technical subject matter. We write for intelligent adults who are not specialists — clear, precise language, with definitions where needed, and no jargon used without explanation.

Expatriate retirement planning in Hong Kong requires specific expertise

Hong Kong occupies an unusual position in the lives of many of its longer-term expatriate residents. The city's MPF system, introduced in 2000, has accumulated meaningful balances for many workers — but its treatment on departure from Hong Kong varies considerably depending on the destination country and that country's tax treaty position with Hong Kong.

Layered on top of this are the pension entitlements many expatriates retain in their home countries — National Insurance records in the United Kingdom, Social Security histories in the United States, superannuation balances in Australia, CPP contributions in Canada — each of which interacts differently with a Hong Kong-based income history.

Voyager Sextant's programmes address these specific intersections. The content draws on the experience of expatriates who have navigated these decisions, the documented rules of the relevant jurisdictions, and the frameworks that help individuals understand which questions they need to answer first — before they make commitments that are difficult to reverse.

Our location in Central, Hong Kong, reflects our focus. We are here for the expatriate community that has made Hong Kong its home — and is now beginning to think seriously about what follows.
