Reviews

From participants across our three programmes

I enrolled in the Foundations course with no clear sense of where I wanted to retire. By the end of the four weeks, I had a proper framework for comparing my options — not an answer, which I understood going in, but the right questions to be working through. That was exactly what I needed at this stage.

The MPF and Pensions course covered territory I had tried to research myself and given up on. The interaction between my MPF balance and the Canadian CPP entitlement I had built up before coming to Hong Kong was something I genuinely did not understand before this. The course made it clear enough that I could have a useful conversation with my accountant about it for the first time.

What I appreciated most was the tone. There was no sales pressure, no suggestion that I should be worried about not having done something already, and no product at the end of the funnel. It is rare to find educational content on financial topics that treats the reader as someone capable of making their own decisions. I found the healthcare module particularly useful — it is one I had not properly thought about before.

I have been in Hong Kong for nineteen years and the question of what to do with my MPF when I leave had been sitting in the background for a while. The Foundations course helped me understand why I had been avoiding it — there are actually several distinct decisions involved, not one big one. Separating them made the whole thing feel much more manageable.

My partner and I are at different stages of our own planning — I enrolled in the Full Programme while he did the MPF course. The written plan I produced by the end was something we could actually discuss together and bring to our IFA in the UK. It changed the quality of that conversation significantly. I would say the course paid for itself on that basis alone.

The currency planning module in the Full Programme is one I would recommend to anyone with income or assets denominated in more than one currency — which is most of us who have been here for more than five years. It is not a topic that shows up much in mainstream retirement planning content, and the treatment here was thorough without being overwhelming.

Case Studies

Participant journeys in more detail

AK

Alastair Kerr, 52 — UK national, 16 years in Hong Kong

Completed: MPF & Pensions course — February 2025

Challenge

Alastair had accumulated both a significant MPF balance and a partial UK National Insurance record from his years working in the UK before relocating. He did not know how these two entitlements would interact, or whether the tax treatment of his MPF withdrawal in the UK would erode a significant portion of its value.

How the course helped

The MPF & Pensions course gave Alastair a clear framework for understanding the UK's treatment of MPF under the existing tax treaty, and the specific steps available to top up his NI record before retirement. He completed the course with a concrete list of questions to bring to a UK tax adviser.

Outcome

Armed with specific questions and a structured understanding, Alastair engaged a UK-based international tax specialist — a conversation he described as more productive in one session than several previous unfocused consultations had been. He made a decision on NI top-up contributions within three months of completing the course.

NC

Nadia Chen, 47 — Australian national, 11 years in Hong Kong

Completed: Full Expatriate Retirement Programme — March 2025

Challenge

Nadia had three plausible retirement scenarios — returning to Australia, staying in Hong Kong, or moving to southern Europe — each with very different financial and healthcare implications. She had superannuation in Australia, MPF in Hong Kong, and no clear method for comparing the scenarios in any structured way.

How the course helped

The Full Programme gave Nadia a side-by-side framework for evaluating all three scenarios across the same dimensions: tax, healthcare access and cost, currency exposure, and the administrative steps each would require. The property module also helped clarify her thinking about her Hong Kong apartment, which she had not previously considered through a retirement lens.

Outcome

Nadia's written plan at the end of the programme did not commit her to any one path — which, at 47, was appropriate. But it gave her a clear picture of what each decision would trigger and what she needed to do in the next two to three years regardless of which path she eventually chose. She described the clarity as significant, even before any final decisions were made.
